As we age, combination of genetic, lifestyle, dietary and environmental factors contribute to our skin ageing. There are three types of skin ageing – the first being intrinsic ageing, which is known as the natural ageing process that begins in our mid- twenties. The second is called extrinsic ageing – where external factors contribute to ageing such as smoking, diet, sleep positions, prolonged exposure to the sun and repetitive facial expressions – such as frowning. Photo ageing is the most common type of skin ageing with the sun being the main culprit. It is common on areas with the highest UV exposure such as the face, chest, arms, hands and legs. This cycle along with our everyday facial movements and sun exposure can worsen the effects of ageing on the skin.
